About us
In 2026, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) celebrates its 80th birthday and the global moratorium on commercial whaling marks its 40th anniversary.
These milestones are a powerful reminder of what international cooperation can achieve – and a critical moment to defend one of the most important global conservation agreements in history.
Despite decades of advocacy, many people around the world are still unaware that commercial whaling continues or that their own governments may be supporting whaling interests within the IWC.
The Coalition
The End Commercial Whaling Coalition was founded by a group of dedicated conservation and animal welfare non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that have been campaigning for the protection of whales and other cetaceans for decades. Its founding members bring long-standing experience in cetacean conservation and have been actively involved in the IWC and other national, regional and international fora that address the protection of cetaceans and wildlife worldwide.
The Petition
To mark this anniversary, we are launching a global public petition to end commercial whaling. By signing, supporters express their commitment to the global moratorium on commercial whaling and strengthening the IWC’s role in the conservation of whales worldwide. The aim is to make global voices visible – and to remind decision-makers that the whales are a vital part of the global commons that no single nation can manage alone.
